FIGURE EIGHT ISLAND (WECT) - The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is conducting a death investigation after a body was found floating in the Intracoastal Waterway Wednesday morning.
According to officials, fishermen discovered the body of a man behind Figure Eight Island, just south of the Figure Eight Bridge, and contacted the US Coast Guard.
Detectives say the body is that of a white male in his 40s and weighing around 180-200 pounds. The man is balding with hair that appears to be greyish brown in color. He also has a beard and a mustache.
According to Lt. Jerry Brewer with the Wilmington Police Department, it's estimated that the body had been in the water between 24 and 36 hours.
He was wearing a grey long-sleeve shirt and black athletic pants with a white stripe down each side of the legs.
