NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A woman who shot and killed her sister in Carolina Beach in 2014 pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter Monday.
Joyce Henry Goldberg, 56, was sentenced to 64 to 89 months in prison, but will get credit for time served. She has been in custody since April 1, 2014, according to jail records.
In exchange for the plea, a charge of second-degree murder was dismissed.
The incident took place at an apartment in the 600 block of Carolina Beach Avenue South. Neighbors said Goldberg's sister was there visiting.
According to search warrants, Glenda Henry Bordeaux took her sister's dog for a walk at around 6:40 a.m. When she returned, she found the door was locked, and rang the doorbell. Goldberg then opened the door and shot Bordeaux.
Goldberg's husband heard the shot and saw his wife holding a gun.
"It was my wife. She shot her sister by accident," Goldberg's husband told 911 operators. "She's shot in the chest... There's only one wound. There was only one shot."
The 911 operator then walked Goldberg's husband through CPR.
"Her eyes are open, but she's definitely not alert," he said. "I think she's… I think it's bad."
The warrant said Goldberg took medication for an illness and took a new medication for the first time the night before the shooting.
Goldberg told authorities something came over her and "it was like [she] was possessed, or something," according to the search warrants.
