WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Pender County Animal Shelter and Monty's Home received gifts and support for an upcoming silent auction from Super Bowl Champion and New York Giant Michael Strahan.

Strahan donated an autographed football, a signed copy of his book, and tickets to his show Live with Michael and Kelly.

His daughters, Isabella and Sophia, who live in Wilmington have been involved with the shelter since they were five, and a major reason why Michael is supporting the initiative.

"I think it's very important to be involved and especially in things that your kids are involved in things that they are passionate about," said Strahan.  "One of the hardest things to do as a parent is that you always want your kids to grow up with compassion and grow up with understanding and grow up with charity and giving. So whatever the goal that involves those things, I want to be involved in it too."

The money raised will help the shelter maintain and purchase new equipment, medicine, and more.

"These donations of these items, they just go so far in helping raise that money," said Jewell Horton, with the Pender Shelter. "Obviously when you get someone like Mr. Strahan in there to help support us it draws attention to our fund and our cause and that's so awesome."

Monty's Home helps train rescue animals - they are sent to prisons for eight weeks as part of an inmate rehabilitation program. After those eight weeks, the dogs graduate, and are adopted by families.
