PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The GE Foundation presented a grant of more than $8,500 to Cape Fear Elementary School to enhance its literacy program in kindergarten.

Carla Cotten, kindergarten teacher, applied for the grant which will be used to purchase Letters Alive.

Letters Alive is a supplemental program based on augmented reality technology.

"The program is interactive with the children and applies the strengthening of reading skills through phonemic awareness instruction, phonetics, sight word recognition, word building, sentence building, writing, fluency, and vocabulary," Cotten said, adding that she looks forward to volunteers from GE getting involved with the program and building ties with the school.

Letters Alive turns the letters of the alphabet into 3D animals without the use of 3D glasses.
