WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - UNCW is looking to revamp their fundraising efforts between university advancement and the Seahawk Club, and as of now, that means creating a new position, a director of development for athletics.

That position will report to Eddie Stuart, the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement. In the meantime, Athletic Director Jimmy Bass will play a more prominent role in fundraising until that hire is made.

"I think we're looking for the consummate fundraising professional. Somebody who's a seasoned fundraising pro, who understands all the fundamentals and all the aspects of a philanthropic giving program," Stuart said. "Someone who can come in and really lead our volunteer board, the Seahawk Club board, as well as the Seahawk Club staff."

UNCW ranked last among public universities in the CAA in total revenue this past year. While plans have been made for a new baseball batting practice facility, a resurfacing of the track, and other facility upgrades, groundbreaking on those projects has been unable to start with the funding for those initiatives not completed.

UNCW saw a 4 percent increase in contributions this year compared to their last fiscal year.

"We're going to have to expand our donor base, nurture relationships, encourage people to support the university like we traditionally haven't seen. But we have a fantastic basis of support that we're hoping to grow further," said Stuart.

In the fiscal year 2016 to date, UNCW has raised $1,201,928, with nearly 65 percent of that raised by the Seahawk Club, and 35 percent by Advancement. 2015 was the best of the last five years for UNCW, as they raised $1,731,188.
