UNCW alum paints to raise awareness for Guatemalan war widows
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Not many of us can say they've truly found their calling. One UNCW graduate says she's found her niche -- painting portraits. However, it's not just a hobby.
She's using her passion to raise awareness for a small group of women who live thousands of miles away.
"Widows from the Guatemalan civil war that lasted from the 50's into the 90's," Evin Leek says.
She's been to Guatemala twice already and volunteered at a shelter for widows. For her senior project last year – she painted a series of nine portraits.
"Painting these women made me feel like I got to know their stories," she says."You can kind of see their pain in their expressions. Puts a lot in perspective in my life."
Evin will get more perspective on Monday when she heads back to Guatemala. She raised hundreds of dollars to buy donations for the widows, as well as young children, who she'll also visit.
Evin says she's making photocopies of each portrait to give back to those who have lost their significant others.
"Hopefully they'll be able to recognize themselves or each other a little bit and I think they'll be flatter that I took the time to paint them," She says.
