WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Eight church youth groups came together Sunday to try to make a difference in the community.

Hundreds of teenagers put together soup kits for the Help Hub at the Harrelson Center.

Elizabeth Hipp, First Presbyterian Minister, called the mission project "Be the Light."

"I think it's a wonderful chance for the kids to lead an initiative," Hipp said. "To be the light of Christ in the world and just to offer hope to a community that has suffered lately. The youth in our community have been harmed and I just think this is a great opportunity for teenagers to give back."

Leaders from the Harrelson Center said the soup kits will be distributed over the next couple months.

The teenagers who volunteered were members of several different denominations.

"High school's a big learning period," P.T. Ingle, New Hanover High School junior, said. "This just helps set habits that will carry you into adulthood well. You know, helping other people and giving back."

Hipp said she hopes to make Be the Light an annual event.
