WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington police have identified a man found dead near an area where shots fired were reported early Wednesday morning.

Cathryn Lindsay with the Wilmington Police Department says the body of Rashaun Akeem McKoy, 30, of Wilmington, was discovered by an officer on Westchester Road around 3 a.m.

According to radio traffic released by New Hanover County 911 Communications, the responding officer said McKoy suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head.

EMS responded and McKoy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lindsay says officers were investigating two separate reports of shots fired in the area where McKoy's body was found. Both incidents occurred around 12:30 a.m. and don't appear to be connected, Lindsay says.

Investigators believe the homicide was drug-related, and not gang-related.

According to the N.C.Department of Corrections, McKoy was a registered sex offender in 2007 for felonious restraint against a minor and indecent liberty with a minor. At that time, Mckoy was 21 and the victim was 14.

Lindsay says the investigation is ongoing and no further information is known at this time.
