ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) - The Elizabethtown man charged with murdering his stepfather Monday morning used a machete, according to a newly released 911 recording.

"He's probably still breathing, but he's in bad shape," the caller said of the 78-year-old victim, John Robert Cole.

Elizabethtown Interim Police Chief Kip Hester said when police arrived at the home in the 2000 block of W. Broad Street around 10:15 a.m., Cole was deceased, and appeared to have been beaten and suffering from multiple lacerations.

Eyewitnesses told officers the suspect, 44-year-old Jonathan Bruce Parker, left on foot towards a nearby wooded area. Elizabethtown Christian Academy was placed on lockdown as officers searched for the suspect.

The Bladen County Sheriff's Office, along with the State Highway Patrol, assisted Elizabethtown police with locating the suspect about 90 minutes later in a wooded area near Hwy 87, about a half mile from the crime scene.

Parker was charged with first-degree murder and held without bond.

Police say Parker and Cole both lived at the home where the crime allegedly occurred.

Hester said his department is working with the SBI and the Bladen County Sheriff's Office, and the investigation is ongoing.
