SURF CITY, NC (WECT) - The beaches in Surf City have suffered significant damage in the past week due to the high lunar tides from the super moon and the recent storms off shore.
Debris ranging everywhere from seaweed to large pieces of wood cover the beaches, and there are escarpments anywhere from two to ten feet deep. Full flights of stairs were ripped from their homes and fences knocked down, now laying like a pile of sticks on the beach.
Town Manager Larry Bergman said the town is working to clean the beaches as fast as possible ahead of the expected rains and winds from Hurricane Joaquin.
"There's not a lot we can do except, as best we can, to get the debris off of the beach that's on their now to keep that debris from causing more damage," Bergman said.
A total of 13 public beach accesses are closed and will remain closed until Joaquin passes through. To find out which of those are closed, you can call the town of Surf City 910-328-4131.
