Former CB councilman accused of hitting bicyclist while drunk

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - A former Carolina Beach councilman was arrested for allegedly hitting a bicyclist while driving drunk and leaving the scene of the accident early Monday morning.

According to Carolina Beach officials, the victim was walking his bicycle on Raleigh Avenue around 1:45 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle, which then left the scene.

Carolina Beach police located the suspect, Alan Bradley Gilbert, 53, 8 blocks away at his residence on Atlanta Avenue.

The victim, Michael Lance of Carolina Beach, sustained minor injuries and refused EMS assistance at the scene.

Gilbert was charged with driving while impaired and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

He was booked in the New Hanover County Jail under a $105,000 bond.

Gilbert served on the Carolina Beach Town Council from 2006-2010.
