WPD arrest man in connection with July murder, victim's family relieved
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A special task force served a first-degree murder warrant to Antonio Horton Beatty, 21, Saturday.
According to Corporal Leslie Irving with the Wilmington Police Department, Beatty was arrested at an apartment complex in the 3700 block of Princess Place Drive. Beatty is charged with the murder of 25-year-old Carlton Whitley.
Whitley was found shot in a parking lot in the 3500 block of Metting Road in July 2015.
At the time of the murder, police said several shots were fired following a dispute on Metting Road.
Officers said Whitley was lying in a parking lot when emergency crews arrived. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Whitley left behind a daughter named Chastity and his fiancée, Octavia Bryant.
Bryant is heartbroken that her daughter will never truly know her father.
"I definitely want her to know that her dad loved her, he adored her," Bryant said.
Bryant and Whitley recently had their baby girl and were planning to get married, but it's a wedding that will never happen.
"He changed me and my daughter's life really drastically and I just hope justice is served," Bryant spoke of the recent arrest.
The arrest won't bring Whitley back, but Bryant said she's just happy she and her daughter are closer to closure.
"I got excited but I was more excited for her more than anything, because she's never going to get a chance with her father, she was only three months when he passed, so she's not going to remember any of that," Bryant said passionately.
Beatty is expected to make his first court appearance Tuesday, Sept. 8.
