WPD Chief: 'Where is the outcry in our community?'

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous shed light on two recent homicides during a news conference Wednesday morning.
According to Evangelous, police arrested Montrell Dyshawn Sweet, 21, in connection to the shooting death of 21-year-old Ali Iquan Dameish Rouse Tuesday, August 18. Sweet has been charged with first-degree murder and firing into an occupied vehicle.
Evangelous says Rouse and a female were in a vehicle in an apartment complex in the 2100 block of Market Street when they were approached by Sweet. Several words were exchanged, and Sweet reportedly fired several shots.
Rouse then drove west on Market, where he crashed into another vehicle and then a wall. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Evangelous says Sweet and the female involved in the incident have a child together, and that the incident sparked from a domestic dispute.
Evangelous also says Wilmington police have received information that there may be a retaliation effort.
"We are not going to sit by idly and let people retaliate. We will do whatever we have to do to stop this before it happens," Evangelous said.

Captain Jim Varrone spoke about the investigation of a murder that happened at the corner of Seventh and Kidder streets Sunday, August 16.
Officers responded to the area around 2:30 a.m. after receiving a ShotSpotter alert.
Varrone said officers came up on a serious traffic accident and determined it was related to the shooting incident. They found a late model BMW stopped at the intersection of Sixth and Kidder streets, and determined it had crashed into an unoccupied van nearby.
According to Varrone, shots were fired about a block away and one person inside the BMW had been hit.
Officers identified the man as 33-year-old Lutfee Muitsen Henderson. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.
Detectives do not believe this death was gang related and they are actively working leads and interviewing witnesses.

Evangelous emphasized during the news conference that these two homicides were NOT related and were NOT random events.
"Where is the outcry in our community?" Evangelous question in response to this seventh homicide so far in 2015. "When is enough enough? How many people are going to die and have to be buried before people say we're not going to tolerate this any longer? The silence is deafening."
Evangelous is encouraging the public to speak up when they see suspicious activity in the area in an effort to prevent any more deaths.
"Nothing is stronger than grassroots efforts," Evangelous said passionately.
