WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A family member of Carlton Whitley, who was shot to death Tuesday night, is speaking out about the father and husband-to-be.
Police on scene said the incident started as a dispute at around 11:15 p.m. in the 3500 block of Metting Road. The fight escalated and 25-year-old Whitley was shot.
Police said Whitley was lying in a parking lot when emergency crews arrived. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Faye Tindall spoke about Whitley in an interview Wednesday. Tindall spoke fondly of the victim and said he was going to marry her daughter.
"He was a great person. He was a good person. What happened to him, he didn't deserve," Tindall said.
Tindall said Whitley had been a positive influence for her daughter, and that the couple had just recently had a baby together.
"Why would you take a father from his child? He loved that baby," said Tindall of Whitley's death.
Several shots were fired during the altercation. Police said some vehicles may have been hit by bullets.
According to Capt. Jim Varrone, police are currently searching for one suspect. No arrests have been made at this time.
The Wilmington Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident.
