SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Southport is breaking ground Wednesday for a 2,500 square foot expansion project.
The addition will include a multi-purpose meeting/classroom, an archival storage room to protect and preserve artifacts and sensitive documents, provide a workshop for building and maintaining exhibits, a library extension for audio-visual media, two new ADA-compliant bathrooms, officers for the Curator of Education and the Friends' Administrator, and space for storing exhibits, artifacts and other materials.
The Friends of the North Carolina Maritime Museum's "Come Grow with Us" campaign has raised more than $287,000, about 94 percent of their $305,000 goal for the expansion.
N.C. Department of Cultural Resources Secretary Susan W. Kluttz will take part in the groundbreaking.
The ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. at the Museum's facility located at historic Fort Johnston on the Southport waterfront.
