SUNSET BEACH, NC (WECT) - Tropical Storm Ana's winds and waves washed away the well-known Kindred Spirit mailbox and bench over the weekend, and volunteers came together to secure the pieces back to their original spots.
According to author Jacqueline Degroot, several people realized it was missing after the storm and went searching for it. Once the mailbox and bench were re-discovered, they brought them back to where they normally sit.
"We made it out to Bird Island early this morning to assess the damage and develop a plan of action," Degroot said Tuesday. "The bench and the mailbox have been returned to the area, but we're going to need some help getting the Kindred Spirit up and running again!"
Degroot's blog says a group of volunteers joined together to re-install the mailbox and bench Thursday at 8 a.m. She says all of the pieces, including the mailbox, the bench and a flagpole was back in working order by about 9:30 a.m.
"The Kindred Spirit is back!" Degroot said Thursday afternoon. "A big 'Thank You' to everyone who helped. This mailbox is truly being watched over!"
She says the flagpole was even re-roped and equipped with a new flag.
