BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office announced K9 Moncey has passed away.
Moncey, a 5-year-old German Shepherd, had been with the sheriff's office for nearly three years and was an active officer in the K9 unit. Deputy Damien Gunnell was her current handler.
According to Emily Flax, spokesperson for the sheriff's office, Moncey passed away unexpectedly on Sunday after suffering a ruptured spleen due to an undetected tumor. Flax said Moncey showed no prior symptoms.
Moncey was the only female in the K9 unit and her specialty was detecting explosives during bomb threats at schools and business.
