BURGAW, NC (WECT) - A 7-year-old boy is recovering in a Wilmington hospital after suffering permanent injuries during a pit bull attack in Pender County over the weekend.

The attack happened early Sunday afternoon on Croomsbridge Road in Burgaw. According to Pender County officials, the pit bull was tethered inside of a fenced pen at a friend's house. Officials say the dog somehow became free and attacked the child while he was playing with other children.

The 7-year-old was hospitalized at New Hanover Regional Medical Center with severe head trauma.

No charges have been filed against the dog's owners because officials say they were in compliance with Burgaw's pet containment ordinance.

The dog has since been euthanized and tested for rabies. The rabies test came back negative.

The victim is still recovering at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
