1 killed, 2 severely injured in Pender Co accident

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WECT) - The State Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that killed one person and severely injured two others Monday.

The accident happened just north of the Long Leaf Drive and US 17 intersection in Hampstead, according to Trooper Casteen. Casteen said a FedEx truck driven by Mark Anthony Carr II was coming south on 17, crossed the center line, and crashed head-on into a 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis headed northbound.

Betty Padgett, 68, from Sneads Ferry died on scene as a result of the accident. Her 86-year-old husband, Milton Padgett, also from Sneads Ferry, was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical where he is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit.

Carr, 31, is from Wilmington and is facing misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and unsafe operation of vehicle charges. He is also recovering from his injuries, including a fractured vertebrae, according to Trooper Casteen.

A blood test was taken from Carr and depending on the outcome of those results, further charges could be filed. Casteen explain the blood test standard procedure when someone is killed in a motor vehicle accident.
