WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Residents of the Hillcrest public housing community now have a new place to purchase produce at an affordable rate.

Volunteers with the AmeriCorps VISTA organization and Feast Down East operation set up a new produce stand at a Hillcrest entrance Friday.

“It's a way to bring people together within the community and it's something I've seen over the past year at Rankin Terrace and it's just really a great way for people to come together over something positive,” said Justin Brantley, a volunteer coordinator and NC Campus Contact with AmeriCorps VISTA.

Brantley said the stand will now appear weekly in Hillcrest on Friday afternoons. He said his organization hopes to benefit local farmers and under-served communities at the same time.

“We work with a lot of small farmers. They have a lot of difficult times finding different outlets for their produce. We try and find outlets for their produce in ways that benefit the under-served community,” Brantley explained.

This Friday, the stand offered honey, broccoli, sweet potatoes, collard greens, turnip greens, and apples.

Brantley said the goal is to have Hillcrest residents eventually take over the produce stand operation.
