WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Vandalism is going to cost the newly renovated Wilmington Municipal Golf Course thousands of dollars. The course reopened Oct. 1 after undergoing a four month, $1.5 million renovation project.
"We put all this work, effort and money into the revitalization of this golf course, and it's just sad that people don't have anything better to do," said Jake Hunt, local golfer.
Employees found seven golf carts scattered around the course early Saturday morning. Some were found submerged in ponds, others crashed into bunkers, and one was found in a nearby parking lot.
Damages were also inflicted upon the resurfaced putting greens and several brand new tee signs. Superintendent Greg Cook expected damages to be worse.
"Considering what they did the damage was really minimal compared to what it could have been," explained Cook.
Course members are estimating $5,000 to $6,000 in total damages. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Wilmington Police Department.
