PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Pender County Commissioners unanimously approved a special use permit Monday night for the construction of a triathlon training and event facility.

The facility will be built off of Highway 210, several miles east of I-40. The location will be built on a 1,080 acre lot in the county adjacent to the Northeast Cape Fear River. Only 435 of those acres would be changed, with the rest remaining wetlands and in their natural state.

The facility is expected to include a 14 mile bike course, 6.5 mile running course, 25 acre lake, a lodge, cabins, campsite and amphitheater.

"Wilmington has become a hotbed for triathlon," according to Bill Scott, the CEO of Set Up Events, who spoke at the public hearing Monday.

"This is a significant capital investment being made and guess what? They didn't come asking for any incentives to do it," Pender County Commission Chairman David Williams said.

It took organizers two attempts to push the facility proposal through. Leaders originally denied the request earlier in the year to build the facility off of Stag Park Road.
