New Hanover Co. teacher charged with DWI, speeding in Brunswick Co.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Authorities have arrested a teacher in New Hanover County who is facing charges for DWI and speeding in a work zone in Brunswick County on Saturday morning.

According to Sgt. P.M. Sanders with the State Highway Patrol, William Charles Bessmer was speeding on a motorcycle, traveling 103 mph in a 55 mph active work zone. Police reports state that it happened on Highway 74/76 near Leland.

Officials said Bessmer was arrested at 1:55 a.m. and was charged with DWI, speeding in a work zone and careless and reckless driving. Officials said Bessmer's breathalyzer test revealed his blood alcohol content was .10. Bessmer was taken to the Brunswick County Jail. He has since been released.

According to a spokesperson for New Hanover County Schools, Bessmer is a P.E. teacher at DC Virgo Preparatory Academy.

School officials say there is no change in Bessmer's employment status at the time of this report.

Bessmer was first hired by the county in 1993 and has taught at Trask Middle School, Williston Middle School and Holly Shelter Middle School.
