NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A Wilmington student is doing all he can to make sure students from southeastern North Carolina have a new pair of shoes for the first day of school.
Gunner Robinson, who's only 9 years old, collected 400 pairs of shoes and distributed them to school officials Monday morning at Murrayville Elementary School.
Robinson wanted something different for his 9th birthday.
Instead of presents, the fourth grader asked friends and family to give him shoes to donate to children in Pender, New Hanover and Brunswick counties.
Social workers from all three counties were present Monday morning to pick up the shoes. The counselors are bringing the shoes to their communities and will distribute them to needy families.
School officials said this type of donation is gravely needed, especially with the increase of homeless children in the school systems.
According to school officials, there are 757 homeless children in New Hanover county schools, 70 homeless children in Pender county and more than 100 in Brunswick.
Robinson said he doesn't want the attention, he just wants to help.
