Police investigate fatal hit and run on Market Street

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Police are investigating a fatal hit and run accident that happened early Saturday morning on Market Street in Wilmington.

According to Lt. Lanier with WPD, the accident happened shortly after 3 a.m. in the 2600 block of Market Street between Forest Hills Drive and 26th Street.

The accident was first reported as a hit and run involving a vehicle and a moped.

When police arrived, they found that Michael Rankin, 40, died as a result of the crash.

A witness told police he saw the driver leave the scene.

Lanier said that the driver later called police and turned herself in.

As a result, Stephanie Wells has been charged with DWI and felony hit and run, according to Lanier.

The crash is still under investigation.
