NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Car crashes remain the number one cause of death for adolescents. So, the Laney High School Sports & Entertaining Marketing II Class and SAVE Club have dedicated a week to creating awareness for local young drivers.
Working with State Farm Project Ignition, National Youth Leadership Conference Grant and StreetSafe Life Saving Driving, the week will include various in-school events.
Starting at 2 p.m. on May 8, Laney High School will host the 5th annual Slam Jam event.
It is a social norms campaign to raise awareness of the effects of distracted driving and seatbelt use.
There will be two seat belt convincers that simulate the impact of an 8 MPH crash without a seat belt, as well as a fatal vision golf cart course.
Students will be able to see firsthand the consequences of not wearing a seat belt and impaired driving.
The student/faculty Slam Jam basketball game is at 4 p.m.
