OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) - The Town of Oak Island has issued an ultimatum to the Yaupon Volunteer Fire Department – giving them six months to relinquish ownership of their fire station in town.
This decision comes after the Town of Caswell Beach voted to build its own fire department to house that unit last week.
According Councilman Jeff Winecoff, town council voted Tuesday to exercise the contract giving the Yaupon Volunteer Fire Department 180 days to move out of its current location and hand over ownership to the Town of Oak Island.
Until now, that fire department, located in Oak Island has provided fire services to Caswell Beach.
Moving forward, the Oak Island Fire Department will move its administrative offices and some fire crews to that location and continue to provide services to that area.
Meanwhile, the Yaupon Volunteer Fire Department will soon be based out of their new headquarters in Caswell Beach.
Winecoff says there will now be three fire departments located within approximately half a mile between them.
