WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Hundreds of students from New Hanover County Schools and group homes hit the track at UNC Wilmington Wednesday morning for the 2014 Special Olympics New Hanover County Spring Games.

After a "Parade of Athletes" and the entrance of the Special Olympics Flame of Hope, around 500 athletes from elementary school to community college age took part in events like the 50-yard dash, softball throw, standing long jump and other competitions.

Family members, fellow students and volunteers cheered on the athletes under a bright dome of sunshine on the UNCW track and field complex.

Many families say this is the day their athletes can celebrate their accomplishments and hard work.
