BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The officer indicted in the shooting death of a teen in Boiling Spring Lakes diagnosed with schizophrenia has been suspended without pay until further notice.

Southport Detective Bryon Vassey was indicted by a Grand Jury Feb. 3, 2014 on the charge of voluntary manslaughter.

Investigators say Vassey and two other officers responded to a call in Boiling Spring Lakes involving 18-year-old Keith Vidal, who reportedly had threatened his mother.

Investigators say the other two officers tried to stun Vidal and Vassey then shot the teen.

Vassey continues to maintain his innocence and assert that his actions were necessary to protect the safety and life of another officer.

City Manager Kerry McDuffie has consulted with Police Chief Jerry Dove and considered the facts and circumstances before coming to the decision that Vassey's suspension will be converted to suspension without pay until further notice.
