Dr. Erika Geisler says cutting out friends does not refer to a specific type of friend, but a general feeling of negativity or heaviness in your chest that you might have when you are with this friend.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - In 2014, people are using the New Year, to re-evaluate friendships. A phrase called, "cutting the friend fat," refers to cutting out toxic and negative friendships.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Erika Geisler says cutting out friends does not refer to a specific type of friend, but a general feeling of negativity or heaviness in your chest that you might have when you are with this friend.

"Is this somebody who makes me a better person? Does this person make me happier? Is this someone I want to have in my life?" asks Geisler, "If not, you might want to let them go."

Dr. Geisler says to do this kindly, and with love so you can maintain a proper working relationship with this individual.
