WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - New Hanover Regional Medical Center has reached the half way point with the construction of its new home for the Cape Fear Heart Associates.
The milestone was celebrated with a "topping out" ceremony. They raised the final and highest structural beam along with an evergreen tree and an American flag. According to history, the tree is a memento of a job well done.
David Parks, the vice president of cardiac and clinical support services, says this is a state of the art facility that will affect hundreds of local patients.
"We have resources that are spread among different buildings and we just don't get economies to scale when services are spread out so far and to so many different locations," Parks said. "So we're actually bringing three different areas into one, which will save the health center money, as well as, give more services directly in one place. So, patients won't have to go to so many different spots to receive care."
NHRMC's new heart center is expected to open in July 2014.
