WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Women packed Grace United Methodist Church's gym Tuesday night for their chance to learn skills that could one day save their lives.

The church played host to a free self-defense class for women, hosted by Wilmington Police with instruction from Evolution MMA.

Roughly 30 women signed up for the free class to learn some basics. Cari Mandley said she's already looking forward to another class.

"I feel more protected now that I know how to get out of certain holds," she said.

Several members of Evolution MMA focused Tuesday's training on Brazilian Jujitsu. Owner Jeremy Owens said the martial arts form is good for women because it specializes in defending against larger, stronger opponents.

Some students said they plan to keep the skills they learned sharp.

"I'm probably going to practice on my husband later to make sure I got this down," joked Chrissy Whitmore.

She added that the other students and instructors made for a welcoming environment.
