WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A man killed in a crash on Carolina Beach Road Monday morning was involved in a separate, minor traffic accident just minutes before the crash that killed him, authorities with the Wilmington Police Department's Traffic Unit confirmed Wednesday.
That minor accident happened on Shipyard Boulevard at Converse Drive, when Frankie Eugene Williams, who later died, ran into the back of a 2013 BMW driven by 37-year-old Feras Tanta. Williams then reportedly pulled away and sped off on Converse Drive.
Tanta tells police that he followed Williams in an effort to try to get a picture of Williams' license plate.
Witnesses say both cars were traveling at high speeds from Converse onto Independence Boulevard, then westbound again on Shipyard Boulevard, onto S. 17th Street and then onto Wellington Avenue.
The pursuit ended when Williams ran the stop sign at Wellington Avenue onto Carolina Beach Road. His car slammed into an 18-wheeler truck and was wedged underneath, killing him.
Police investigated the two crashes separately, and Tanta has been charged with misdemeanor reckless operation of a motor vehicle for pursuing Williams.
