WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – Emergency crews are responding to an overturned 18-wheeler on Highway 74/76 in Whiteville.

According to authorities, the truck was carrying toxic sodium and flipped over around lunchtime Thursday.

Whiteville Police Chief Jerry Britt said officers have spent several hours trying to clear the scene. Officials believe weather conditions may have played a role in the accident.

According to Britt, a truck is on the scene to suck toxic sodium out of the 18-wheeler that flipped over. He also said the city is bringing in dirt to absorb the chemical so it doesn't get into the water system.

Police said there have been five accidents within a few miles of each other throughout the day on Highway 74/76.
