WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Fishermen experienced a rare seal sighting at Wrightsville Beach. It happened Thursday morning off of Johnnie Mercer's Pier.
"My experience, this may be the third one I've seen in 30 years so it's really rare and that he hung out for 5 or 6 hours is pretty amazing," said Matt Johnson, who owns the pier.
Johnson shot video of the seal from the pier.
He said the seal hung out while the fish were biting.
"An undersized flounder had to be returned and before it hit the bottom, he had it and he was on his back eating," he said.
Johnson said he's spotted a humpback whale, swimming deer, beavers, river otters and sharks from the pier.
"It's interesting," he said. "You never know what you are going to see when you come down here."
