WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Eddie Biedenbach will step down as head coach at UNC-Asheville Tuesday afternoon and will become an assistant head coach on Buzz Peterson's staff at UNCW.
An official announcement from both programs was expected late Tuesday afternoon according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
"I can't confirm anything at this time." Said UNCA Mike Gore Associate AD for External Affairs/Athletics Communications.
UNCW Senior Associate A.D./Communications Joe Browning said the University cannot comment on any hire until it is made official. UNCW Director of Athletics Jimmy Bass was not reached by phone Tuesday afternoon.
The move comes two weeks after UNCW dismissed associate head coach Jamie Kachmarik and assistant Dante Calabria.
"I'd be very interested in someone who's had head coaching experience, someone who's been on the hot seat that can give me some advice." Peterson said on March 18th. "The bottom line is you're only as good as your players so we need people who are connected and who can bring us some quality players."
Biedenbach, who has a home in Wrightsville Beach, just completed his 17th season as head coach of the Bulldogs. He has been named Big South Coach of the Year three different times and four times has led the Bulldog program to Big South regular-season titles.
The former N.C. State standout guided Asheville to a 16-16 record last year and 10-6 mark in Big South Conference play.
Peterson had hoped to have his assistant coaching positions filled prior to the Final Four and the Director of Basketball Operations seat filled by the start of the season.
