NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Several federal agencies are in the middle of a criminal investigation in New Hanover County.

WECT cameras spotted agents with Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection on Amsterdam Way Monday night. Tow trucks were taking away several cars, mostly Land Rovers.

Agents on scene could not provide many details about the situation, but they did confirm that the incident did not pose a threat to public safety.

A nearby business owner who asked to remain anonymous said the building where this all happened has been up for rent for a while. WECT crews could not find a business sign for the location.

The cars started rolling into the area last week, according to the neighboring business owner. He said he was shocked to see them being taken away Monday.

Robert Becker, resident agent in the Wilmington office of Homeland Security Investigations, said the location was the last of the night for agents who had been serving search warrants around the county.

The public information officer for HSI, Vincent Picard, confirmed that the agencies are working on a criminal investigation. Picard expected more information to become available Tuesday.
