WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A veteran of the United States Army, who founded the Student Veterans Advocacy Group (SVAG), plans to run for Congress in North Carolina's 3rd District next year.

Jason Thigpen announced his intentions to challenge long-time Congressman Walter B. Jones for the Republican nomination in 2014. Jones is expected to run for re-election as well.

Thigpen has been working to help make college for affordable for veterans.

Thigpen was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds he received while fighting in Iraq in 2009.

On his campaign website, Thigpen says the country needs to cut spending to reduce the deficit, so Congress can tackle other issues like reducing governmental regulation, Medicare, Social Security, immigration and education. You can read more about Thigpen's platform here.
