WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - If you've ever been to a City Stage production, you know the theater is right next to a bar, but with the company's newest play the bar is closer than ever before.
Justin Tanner's Day Drinkers sets a group of people at a local watering hole, seeking comfort at the bottom of a glass.
"All day and into the night, and it's everyday," said actress Barbara Weetman. "That's their life. They live their lives out in a bar. All of these people have the same human frailties that we all have. They may be exacerbated by all the alcohol, but we can recognize all of these people in our daily lives, in ourselves."
There's the young couple who runs the bar trying to manage their marriage, the older couple who's newly engaged, the same-sex couple, and more. Everyone uses a cup to cope.
"Honestly, I think this show is a love story ultimately," said Weetman. "It's about people who I think desperately want to connect."
From the comfort and safety of their favorite bar stool.
