OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – A man from Ocean Isle Beach surprised his wife this week with a $661,409 Carolina Cash 5 jackpot. According to lottery officials, that is the largest Cash 5 jackpot awarded to a single winner this year.

Dale Strickland said he stopped by Palms Grocery on Ocean Highway East in Winnabow Saturday and bought a Cash 5 ticket. He checked his numbers Sunday morning to see if he had won.

"I thought I hit 4," he recalled. "Then I said 'Uh-oh – I hit five!'"

According to a press release from the NC Education Lottery, Strickland beat odds of 1 in 575,757 to win the jackpot. He kept his winning a secret until Tuesday when he mentioned another recent lottery win in the area to his wife.

He told his wife about the coupled from Southport who won $100,000 and asked her to tell him ten things she would do with $100,000.

Strickland said the first few items on the list, such as new beach chairs, sounded conservative, so he encouraged her to talk more.

Getting suspicious, Strickland's wife asked him if he had won $100,000. That's when he showed her a picture of his winning ticket with the estimated jackpot printed on it.

After state and federal taxes were withheld, their winnings totaled $449,758..

According to the NC Education Lottery, the Stricklands plan to pay off their mortgage with the winnings, share it with their two adult sons and take a vacation in Hawaii.
