WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A doctor who is contracted with New Hanover Regional Medical Center has been charged with driving under the influence.

Wilmington police pulled over Dr. Paul Chipley on South 17th Street Tuesday morning near Savannah Court.

Chipley is a member of the American Anesthesiologist Group, and NHRMC contracts with the company, which is located in the same medical complex.

Chipley was wearing medical scrubs at the time of his arrest. It is not yet known whether or not Chipley was on his way to or from work.

A spokesperson for the hospital says Chipley did not work Tuesday and was not on the schedule Wednesday.

An officer pulled Chipley over for driving erratically, conducted a field sobriety test, then arrested him.

The hospital said Chipley has always been in good standing.  However, the fate of his future is now up to the American Anesthesiology Group.

The hospital says that group would be responsible for handling any disciplinary actions.
