Money in a Minute: Which Sunday paper should you buy?

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The easiest way to start saving money is to grab a Sunday paper for the coupons.  But some people have a couple of newspapers to choose from each Sunday.

If you live in a town that offers papers from surrounding cities, it can be tricky trying to figure out which newspaper to buy.

Typically, you're going to get a Redplum or a Smartsource insert.  Sometimes you'll get one insert in your paper, other times you'll get one from both RP or SS.  Occasionally, you'll even get two inserts from one company.  Unfortunately though, not all inserts are created equally.

For example, we chose two papers from North Carolina released on the same Sunday.  We bought a Wilmington Star News and a Raleigh News and Observer.  Both papers had a Redplum insert, but the Raleigh paper had a lot more savings.  In fact, the Raleigh paper had about $42 worth of coupons while the one in Wilmington only had about $11 in savings.

Coupons vary from city to city.  Smart shoppers tend to go for the paper from the bigger city because there are typically more savings offered in the larger market.  Most smart shoppers are already aware of this little secret and will get up before dawn to grab one, two or 12 Sunday papers.  If you are lucky enough to nab one of these coveted papers, consider leaving at least one for someone else--that way more people can enjoy the savings.
