WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A crash report released by the Wilmington Police Department reveals the driver of an SUV speeding on Forest Hills Drive earlier this week was likely under the influence of drugs at the time. Officials are waiting for the results of a drug test before confirming that statement.
According to the report, Raphael Samuel was driving about 85 mph on the road and hit a speed bump near the intersection of Forest Hills and Colonial Drives. The SUV crashed into a tree going an estimated 80 mph.
Two female passengers, Yashica White, 21, and Shatia Hankins, 25, died on impact. The driver of the SUV, Raphael Samuel, 22, was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning.
Demond Jones, 30, was riding in the backseat. He was injured but is expected to survive.
According to police, no one riding in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.
