Workers are putting in windows at the Mayfaire Town Center, and they can clearly see opening day is looming. Stores new to Wilmington like Chico's and Williams Sonoma are still projected to open on March 25th.

But last-minute hold-ups are always possible. "Mayfaire is going to be a staged opening," said H.J. Brody, co-developer of the New Town Center. "Our grand opening is May 6th, and we feel that at that time we'll have a good portion of our retailers in place."

Hecht's opens in just one week. Michael's and Linens N' Things are slated for a later spring opening. And Barnes and Noble is projected to open in June.

Brody said Mayfaire will attract people from all over.

For those who drive to Raleigh or Myrtle Beach for good shopping, they no longer have to leave Wilmington--they can do that right here.

"I think that now that you've got a Williams Sonoma here, an Ann Taylor here, and a Cold Water Creek here, you'll turn your wheels and come to the Wilmington market versus feeling like you have to go to Raleigh," Brody said.

Nor is Brody too concerned about competition from the Coastal Grand Shopping Mall, soon to open in Myrtle Beach. "We think we'll hopefully compliment each other and be very positive to the area," Brody said. "I think we'll plug that hole and give people the reason they don't need to go further south."
