WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - City Stage is once again pushing the envelope when it comes to local theater. This time it's with a show that has a very recognizable name because of the movie it's based on.
Many people have heard of the film Debbie Does Dallas, even if they haven't seen it. It's an adult movie that was released in the 1970s.
City Stage performed the musical based on the movie several years ago and decided to bring it back for an encore.
The show may not be the most sophisticated theater, but it's really not trying to be.
"It is totally all in good fun," said actress Sandy Vaughan.
If you haven't seen the original movie, then here's the plot, if you can really call it that.
"Debbie Benton got accepted to be a Dallas cowgirl cheerleader," said Vaughan. "She's so excited, but her parents won't give her the money. They think it's outdoor burlesque. So what's the next best thing? Her fellow cheerleaders are going to help her get to Dallas."
"We all get jobs after school and on the weekends," said actress Madison Weidberg. "I work at the record store."
"You know, helping people around town, helping at the library, the candle shop," said Vaughan. "Stuff like that. If you're to watch the original movie, you will actually see that the lines are similar, but the actions are not."
That's where the music comes in and the over-the-top jokes.
"First and foremost, it's a comedy," said Vaughan. "The content will be questionable for a lot of people, but if you like to laugh, you're going to be doing it pretty much the whole time."
