Bakery inside bookstore delights locals, tourists and anyone with a sweet tooth

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)- Enjoying a classic book with some baked goodies and a delicious mug of hot coffee is one of the most popular ways to spend the time.

In downtown Wilmington, a bakery inside of a family owned and operated bookstore is getting rave reviews from locals, tourists, and more.

Sugar on Front Street has been open a little over one year and it's now busier than ever.

The store is located in Old Books on Front Street.

Sam Smith, the owner of Sugar, starts baking at 2 a.m. every day to get all the orders in. She makes all the traditional favorites, like chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal raisin cookies, chocolate cake, but also includes some of her own recipes and creations, such as pumpkin whoopee pies, kahlua cake, or reindeer food.

Smith will re-create old family recipes on request, and makes special gifts for teachers that include a batch of freshly made cookies and coffee.

Some of her most popular items include her homemade cakes, such as the double chocolate cream -carrot cake deluxe and coconut fluff.

Friday on Carolina in the Morning, Smith showed off her baking skills as viewers got an inside look at how the magic happens.
