NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Mary Douglass Bruno was arrested Wednesday morning on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in connection with the death of her late husband, Carmine Anthony Bruno.
Bruno was previously charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder, according to a statement from District Attorney Ben David's office.
Based upon evidence that was collected over the past several months and newly acquired information at the trial of Dennis Benjamin Roy, the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office secured warrants for the additional charges.
During a first appearance Wednesday, a judge set a $300,000 secured bond. Her next court appearance was set for December 8th.
A jury found Roy guilty of first degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison, according to the District Attorney's office.
Roy confessed in 2010 to assaulting Carmine Bruno with a bat while he was sleeping. Deputies said Roy was upset over the way Bruno spoke to his wife.
Roy was a tenant of the Bruno family at their home on 101 South Branch Road.
Authorities say Mary Bruno and Roy may have been having an affair. Mary Bruno first told authorities she was given drugs when her husband was killed, which kept her in an incoherent state for a few days.
After further investigation, officials determined Mary was not incoherent and was an active participant in her husband's death.
Bruno's attorney, Alex Hall, says these new charges came about because Roy changed his story and said on the stand that Mary did know he was going to kill her husband. Hall says there's not much of a case against his client.
