UNCW issues voluntary evacuation and curfew

WILMIGNTON, NC (WECT) – UNCW officials issued a voluntary evacuation beginning at noon Friday, August 26 due to the recent shift of Hurricane Irene.

Classes will be cancelled starting at noon; the library will be closed at noon and will reopen Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

A campus curfew will be in effect at 10:00 p.m. Friday, unless conditions change.

The Wilmington area is now under a hurricane warning. Irene has changed in track to the west and the hurricane is projected to pass offshore of the Wilmington area. Some flooding is anticipated on the UNCW campus.

As a precaution, the UNCW Emergency Operations Center will open at 6:00 p.m. Friday and remain in operation for the duration of the storm.

Current forecasts include hurricane force winds at local beaches and tropical force winds on the UNCW campus, more than eight inches of rain are anticipated Friday evening and through Saturday.

Strong rip currents are anticipated throughout the weekend, so people are strongly advised to stay out of the water.
