WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Cape Fear Theatre Arts' new summer season has been all about the plays, until now. The company has opened its first summer musical.
"It's so ridiculous and laughing at the theater itself," said actress Davis Byrd.
It's Ruthless! The Musical which centers around "sweet and innocent" child star Tina Denmark. She's a true Broadway baby who has her sights set on landing the role of Pippi Longstocking in the school play.
"She wants the part in a play really badly," said actress Lily Zukerman. "So badly that she kills one of her classmates to get the part."
There begins the whole ruthless thing, and it only gets worse from there. But this is the kind of drama you can laugh at as you watch the characters go over the top.
"Ruthless makes fun of every ridiculous musical and 50s/60s parodies all over the place," said Byrd. "Specifically it focuses around this deranged family that's all involved in show business where the daughter is just clawing, trying her best to get into acting and performing. Mom doesn't want anything to do with that. She's okay being completely normal. Then Sylvia comes in and everything goes nuts."
Tina's mother finally gets into the star action and new characters emerge.
"People are revealing who they are right and left," said Zukerman. "It's been fun seeing how crazy stuff can get in real life, but this doesn't really pertain to real life at all. It's hilarious. It is crazy."
And most of all, it is show business.
