COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Officials gathered at the post office in Whiteville for a bicentennial commemoration Friday.
The post office is selling neon stamps with the word "celebrate" on them, plus the chamber of commerce is selling envelopes with special old post marks.
The acting post master said it was a day to recognize the special role post offices have in communities.
"Especially in rural areas, it actually connects you to the outside world," said James Bell. "That letter from mom, that letter from far away, that package you're getting, all of that means something to people when they get it that you can't replace with email or Twitter and Facebook."
There will be other events throughout the year to recognize Whiteville's 200 years.
